Welcome to our new website!
Welcome to the Australian Local Government Women’s Association – Queensland Branch.
Our members are integral to our association and our aim is to continue to ensure we provide the utmost value to both women and men within the local government sector.
Whilst our primary focus remains on supporting women, we do strongly encourage and welcome our male counterparts to participate at all levels. We acknowledge that without their support, gender equity is difficult to achieve.
I am proud of the achievements women in local government have made in the last couple of years and delighted that the association has been a contributing factor in their success.
Whilst we have seen some positive changes, women still only represent 11% of CEOs, 20% of senior managers, 32% of elected members and 15% of Mayors at a national level. Women currently make up 46% of the local government workforce which means there’s still some work to be done.
ALGWA continues to tailor our offerings and meet the needs of our members through proactive support services, mentoring, coaching, hosting regular events and professional development services.
In 2017, we received the largest grant ever provided to the association by a State government department - the Department of Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning. This funding was provided to support women in their professional development and mentoring requirements within the local government sector. Without the support from the department and from our other valued partners, providing some of these services would be unsustainable.
Whilst our focus has historically been within the local government sector, we welcome members who partner with or are outside of the local government industry and are proud to continue to gain further memberships from the State government, industry partners and private sector. We are here to support you. Please feel free to make contact with us as we would love to hear from you.
